Psychiatric Evaluations, Diagnosis & Medication Management
Nilah Watson, MSN, APRN-CNP, PMHNP-BC
Nilah Watson is a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Northern Kentucky University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Nilah provides compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care tailored to each client’s unique experiences, goals, and needs. Her clinical interests include anxiety, depression, adjustment-related concerns, ADHD, obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCD), and trauma-related symptoms. She believes effective mental health care begins with creating a safe, supportive environment where clients feel understood and are encouraged to take an active role in their treatment. Working collaboratively with clients and their treatment team, she focuses on practical strategies and thoughtful treatment planning that support improved functioning, greater stability, and overall well-being.
Her approach begins with understanding the whole person—not simply deciding whether to prescribe medication. During the initial psychiatric evaluation, Nilah works with clients to better understand what they are experiencing, identify factors that may be contributing to their symptoms, review prior treatment and medication history, and discuss the range of treatment options that may be appropriate. Clients do not need to know in advance whether medication is right for them. The first appointment is an opportunity to ask questions, receive education, better understand available options, and make an informed decision about next steps.
When medication may be helpful, Nilah takes time to explain the potential benefits, risks, side effects, alternatives, and monitoring involved so clients can participate actively in treatment decisions. Medication is never viewed as the only answer or as an automatic outcome of an evaluation. Depending on each person’s needs, recommendations may include medication, psychotherapy, behavioral or lifestyle changes, coordination with a primary care provider or other specialists, additional assessment, or a combination of approaches.
Nilah believes psychiatric care is most effective when it is integrated with the rest of a client’s mental health treatment. She works collaboratively with therapists and other members of the treatment team to support continuity of care, reduce symptoms, improve functioning, and help clients engage more fully in counseling, relationships, work, school, and daily life.
Nilah provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management. For clients who are uncertain about medication, an initial psychiatric consultation can still be a valuable starting point. The purpose of the evaluation is not to pressure clients into taking medication, but to provide a clearer understanding of their symptoms, answer questions, review available options, and determine together whether medication management—or another treatment direction—makes sense for them at this time.
